Snowplow Driver Saves 5-Year-Old In Subzero Temperatures

From WISN Wisconson

David Gehrke, a snowplow driver in West Bend, Wisconsin, is being hailed as a hero after saving a 5-year-old boy who wandered away from home in subzero temperatures.

Gehrke was out clearing roads at 4 a.m. last Friday when he found the child wandering through the wind and snow in pajamas.

"I immediately took my jacket off and wrapped it around him and put him in the truck," Gehrke said.
"I called police dispatch. I got the heat blasting in the truck. I'll keep him warm until we get help on the way."

The boy, Maddox Pierce, was under the care of his fourteen-year old aunt when he ventured out of the house. Pierce told police he thought he was home alone and wanted to make his way to his grandfather's house.

No one is being charged in the incident. Pierce was recovered before sustaining injury, and West Bend police gave Gehrke a certificate of appreciation. Pierce's mother says she has since bought alarms and a camera system.
